The Second and North Society of Branford was established in 1724 by the northern farmers and a meeting house was erected “on the knoll by the river.” Jonathan Merrick was chosen to be the first minister of the church, organized in 1727. He served as minister until 1769 during which time the meeting house was completed and a third society of Branford, called Northford was established. When the Reverend Samuel Eells replaced Merrick, there were 77 members in the church. Charles Atwater became the church’s third minister in 1808, serving until 1825. It was under his ministry that the Sunday School was formed in 1820.
In the winter of 1829, the church voted to build a new meeting house. It was occupied in March 1831. Its basement was used for the first town election, after the second and third societies of Branford incorporated as the town of North Branford. A house on North Street was purchased in 1838 for use as a parsonage and served as a home for 27 pastors until 1957 when a new parsonage was built on Notch Hill Road, used until 1973.
The Ladies Sewing Society was formed in 1878 and the ladies raised the money for building the Chapel, dedicated in January 1887. When the grading for the Chapel was done, old grave stones around the church were moved across the street. In October 1884, a Christian Endeavor Society was organized and today the young people of the church carry on with the youth group.
A gala celebration was held in 1902 to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the church. A special sermon was delivered by the Rev. Franklin Countryman, pastor of the church from 1882 to 1906.
Tragedy struck on February 1, 1908, when the church burnt to the ground. The chapel was saved, thanks to a bucket brigade from the nearby river. A meeting of North Branford citizens voted to build a new church and the present building was occupied Easter 1909. As the town grew from a small farming community to a residential suburb, the church grew also. A parish house was built in 1960, connecting the Sanctuary and the Chapel, providing rooms for the church school and Fellowship Hall. The building is now used during the week by a day-care center.
During the 1970’s, under the leadership of Rev. James Ameling, the interior of both the Chapel and the Sanctuary were renovated and the new kitchen completely outfitted. In the 1990’s the church was still changing. The pastor’s office, church office and kitchenette were renovated, the church parking lot was paved, and walls were erected in the undercroft to create classrooms. In 2002, the church celebrated its 275th anniversary with several events held throughout the year, including having a float in the town Memorial Day Parade.
Currently, an extensive renovation project is underway to both preserve the history of the church and update its facilities. Although the church has been through many changes, the warmth and friendship that the members of this church extend to visitors and each other remains constant.
